The uniqueness of photography in the world of art is that it begins as an image of something that exists. As a photographer, I am both inspired and constrained by the world as it is. Photography becomes art through selection and interpretation according to the creative vision of the artist. My most common subjects are found in the natural world, but I acknowledge that humans are the result of the natural process of evolution. Hence, I do not avoid humans or the artifacts of human life when they can contribute elements of beauty or interest to my photographs. I look for interesting forms, colors, reflections, shadows and odd juxtapositions. Then I attempt to abstract away the elements that do not relate to the essence of the scene. I rarely create a scene or situation, but in photography, as in all visual arts, there is no such thing as the “correct” rendering, so I do not hesitate to make digital enhancements. |
